KBA offers two dredging methods
Hydraulic dredging uses pumps
KBA performs hydraulic dredging by drawing bottom sediment into a water-and-sediment slurry and moving it through a hose or pipeline. This method can reach material without placing an excavator at every point along the bank. It does not make the removed material disappear. The receiving area must contain the slurry, allow solids to settle or dewater, and manage released water appropriately. Pumping distance, debris, sediment character, hose routing, elevation, and available containment space all affect feasibility.
Mechanical dredging uses an excavator
KBA also performs mechanical dredging with an excavator and bucket to physically remove sediment. Mechanical work may handle compacted material, roots, and suitable mixed debris directly, but it requires a stable working position and adequate reach. Wet material needs a route and location for draining, staging, loading, reuse when allowed, or off-site disposal. Soft banks, limited access, utilities, fences, trees, structures, and overhead hazards can restrict where the excavator can operate.
The appropriate method follows the complete sediment route
Neither dredging method is automatically better for every Portland pond. Hydraulic dredging may reduce the need for machine travel around part of a shoreline but adds slurry containment and water-management demands. Mechanical dredging provides direct bucket removal but requires firm access and room for wet material. Some projects may use one method; others may be staged or require additional services. KBA recommends an approach only after evaluating the pond and the land available for handling what comes out.
Restoration can include more than sediment removal
KBA’s pond work can address vegetation, shoreline condition, access, and physical features associated with the restoration scope. Correcting an eroding approach or reopening a blocked route can support maintenance, but work on an engineered stormwater facility must preserve its approved function. Water chemistry, fish management, aeration design, liner repair, and ongoing biological treatment may require other specialists or separate planning.
